🧘What is a Yoga Teacher Training?

A Yoga Teacher Training (YTT) program is a comprehensive educational journey designed to equip aspiring yoga teachers with the essential skills to instruct in Yoga. The program includes a 200-hour foundational course to guide students in learning diverse subjects around Yoga.

These include mastering yoga postures (Asanas), ethical teaching principles, meditation and breathing techniques, philosophical aspects of Yoga, anatomical studies, and Ayurvedic nutritional principles. This is the first step ideal for students eager to deepen their yoga practice or start a professional teaching path in Yoga.

After your completion of the RYT200, a certification acknowledged and respected by the Yoga Alliance, students can further their expertise through additional specialized modules. These modules, varying in duration from 50 to 300 hours, are tailored to explore specific yoga styles in depth, deepen their knowledge, or specialize in a distinctive style of Yoga.

As a guiding authority in the yoga community, the Yoga Alliance ensures that these programs follow the highest educational standards, thereby fostering a network of proficient and knowledgeable yoga instructors dedicated to the authentic practice and teaching of Yoga.

🧘Why did I decide to do a 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training?

I chose to study this course because I needed to know more and dive deep into Yoga. I'd been practicing Yoga for over two years before I enrolled. And it improved my mobility and calmed my mind. After reflecting on the benefits of Yoga in my mind and body, I wanted to learn more about philosophy and understand anatomy better. Yoga has always helped me meditate, listen to my body, and work on myself. Moreover, I did this training to be able to teach afterward; it was after I started this adventure that I realized that it was indeed what I wanted to do.

More than just the movements of asanas could benefit everyone, especially in the yoga philosophy. It is a consistent self-work on how to gain conscious, compassionate self-inquiry. Yoga will not give you the answers but will direct you to search for them. For these reasons, I needed to learn more about Yoga.

🧘How do I choose the right 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training course for you?

When I was choosing a YTT, it can be overwhelming at the beginning; there are hundreds and hundreds of schools to choose from. Here's a breakdown of the things I considered during my research:

  2. How much is 200 hour yoga teacher training in Bali?

  3. What is included 200 hour yoga teacher training in Bali?

  4. Food and Accommodation

  5. Reviews & Number of Students

Accreditation & Location

My first deciding factor when choosing a school is the location. When researching, I was looking at Rishikesh in India or Bali. But since I was fixing it during COVID, I chose Bali since they opened their borders.

I also ensured that the school I inquired about was part of the Yoga Alliance. This association organizes and sets the standards of Yoga Teacher Training from the number of classes, hours, and types of courses that should be included in the program.

Enrolling in a school accredited by this association will allow you to easily teach internationally, giving you an advantage, especially if you want to teach in a hotel or yoga studio.

Another bonus factor for me in choosing schools is if the school is part of bookyogaretareat.com. While searching the Yoga Alliance website, I found my training: House of Om Bali, an example of some of the more exotically located course options (Bali, India, Costa Rica, Thailand …) structured for 1+ months. You can easily book online and read feedback from other students about the school, which made it easier for me to decide.

What is included in the 200 hour yoga teacher training in Bali?

We studied several topics such as anatomy (skeleton, anatomy of movement, muscle anatomy, fascias, bandhas). All the philosophies of yoga (Yoga sutras, history of Yoga, Yamas…), chakras, Sanskrit, ayurveda or meditation, and pranayama. We also learned how to sequence a balanced yoga class, prevent injuries, and protect joints, muscles, ligaments, and tendons from injury. Alignment is also critical, and we had many hours of clinic postures where we analyzed the alignment of each pose.

The variety of teachers we had was a great mix; we also had an introduction to Ashtanga yoga, Hatha & Vinyasa yoga, and how to teach Yoga by giving guidelines of alignments and clear instructions. Then, we also had a lesson on how to start a business in the Yoga industry. The founder of House of Om also led the Sound Bath Meditation and Acro Yoga activity by the beach.

We also had guest Breathwork and Ice Bath facilitators; it was exciting to see the effects of conscious breathing and ice baths on our body and releasing trauma. If you're interested in this area, I'll write an article about it.

Food and Accommodation in 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training in Bali

The food and where I stayed were delicious. We got vegan food every day. It was healthy and tasted great. I also got lucky because I was supposed to stay in a dormitory, but they moved me into a twin-sharing room. This was nice because I had more space, our room had a balcony, and I could relax better after learning all day. Looking back, I am so happy I didn't experience the 4-bed dormitory since the toilet waiting time might be a nightmare.

Reviews & Number of Students in 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training in Bali

When I was in Bali for my 200-hour yoga teacher training, only 17 of us were in the class. This was good. In a small class like ours, it was easier to get to know everyone. We could help each other and learn from each other.

The teachers could pay more attention to each of us, which helped me learn better. We all got chances to try teaching in front of the class, which was scary but valuable. We all got closer and learned a lot because there weren't many of us.

🧘How did I decide to choose the right school?

After my initial research, this training course was explicitly about the program itself. I've been to Bali several times, which made it easy to choose Bali as my first option. Next, the visa requirements are straightforward.

My yoga practice and basic foundation are more into Hatha and Vinyasa styles. I liked that its modules offered all the core basics of Yoga, which is crucial for me as we need solid foundations to advance our skills. Another critical point is there are only 15- 20 students per Teacher training in most reviews I read back then at House of Om

There were only 17 students in this particular course, making the experience even more intense and personalized. If you want a YTT in Bali, check out House of Om. The team is lovely and always offers assistance. Additionally, they teach a course on business or marketing for Yoga, a fantastic bonus.

So, if you're keen to learn the basics, I wholeheartedly advise you to take this opportunity to be in a beautiful place in Bali.

You can learn more about the House of Om's schedule on this page. House of Om expanded in Bali; they now have three schools.

If given the option now, I will still choose House of Om - Yoga Amerthan. It might be a pretty little out of the center of Ubud, but it's very close to nature. It is making our practices and lessons extra unique and less buzzing from the busyness of Bali tourism.

🧘What evaluation methods were used?

Every week, we had lessons and recaps from our teachers; we also had to practice Yoga and were encouraged to practice teaching and give feedback to each other. Then, finally, on our last week, we had to give classes (pranayama and meditation, then asanas) to the entire class. All this was, of course, to be done and analyzed by the teacher who gave us our feedback.

At the end of our course, we had written exams and were sub-divided into groups to teach our lessons to our classmates. In the last few days of training, we had the graduation at Tegalalang Rice Terraces area and a fantastic meal back in the school.

🧘What do I think of the YTT experience overall at House of Om?

Beyond all the courses and knowledge I acquired, this training course has brought about massive change within me. It has been a solid month, both emotionally and physically. There is a lot of self-analysis and soul-searching; for example, you have to learn to lessen your ego.

I am also fortunate that all my classmates were supportive, authentic, and fun mates to be around. Being in a small group, we could talk openly and listen to each other's stories. It was solid; we cried and laughed together, and I know we have built strong bonds.

The training offered by House of Om is incredibly informative, and I feel very confident about teaching after graduating. It has given me the necessary knowledge to ensure I am prepared to teach.

I credit my teachers, Unieng, Tofan, Dani, Amira, Diana, & Wissam. They were all very inspiring and pushed us as a group and individually to our full potential as yoga teachers. Their teaching styles were different, but all listened to each of us and knew how to transmit their knowledge perfectly. I also loved the respect within our group, as there was no judgment – everyone was beautiful and of the same mindset.

To all those hesitating whether or not to sign up for a YTT, do not doubt or be afraid – do it. This will be the best gift you can give to yourself. I understand the cost is a factor, but I see it as a personal investment.
